Varicose veins are a common problem, affecting up to 1 in 3 adults in their lifetime. They are usually a sign of an underlying venous insufficiency.
Thread veins can appear anywhere on the body but are mostly evidenced on the legs and face. They are more common than varicose veins, affecting up to 80% of adults.
Leg ulcers appear as broken skin in the lower leg or feet. We have been successfully treating venous leg ulcers for over 20 years.

Veincentre Stoke & Manchester
Helen qualified as a nurse in 2002 at Keele University School of Nursing and Midwifery. Before joining Veincentre Helen worked in a variety of clinical settings including Surgery, A&E, Medical Assessment Unit and Outpatients. She developed a special interest in vein treatment while working with Dr West at the North Staffs Nuffield Hospital and joined Veincentre when we opened our new Stoke clinic in June 2012.
She then underwent a comprehensive training programme under the supervision of Dr West. This included extensive hands on training in all the techniques offered by Veincentre including foam sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy, EVLA and Clarivein. She has augmented this in-house training by visiting centres across the UK and in Europe to gain further experience in Ultrasound scanning and Clarivein treatment.
She now has extensive experience and expertise in both diagnostic ultrasound scanning and the performance of all venous interventional treatments and has already successfully undertaken over 2700 Endovenous Laser Ablations and thousands more ultrasound guided venous interventions such as foam sclerotherapy.
Helen was shortlisted for the Nursing Times Surgical nurse of the year in 2016 and was further shortlisted to the final 8. She was the only individual as the other shortlisted candidates were all part of a group within their NHS trust.
Her appointment to the role of Vein Specialist in Veincentre is pioneering in the field of Phlebology in the UK. Specialist nurses are commonplace in other areas of medicine and their skills and abilities well recognised in specialties ranging from ophthalmology and cardiac surgery to general practice and acute hospital medicine. Nurse specialists and doctors work together as a team and support each other. Helen has been part of the training programme for our newer consultants since 2015 and helps support the Drs when clinics first open due to her wealth of experience within varicose veins treatments. This team provides the safest and most effective means of providing quality vein treatment utilising the skills of both doctor and nurse in perfect harmony.
Helen also carries out treatment for facial thread veins, otherwise known as thermocoagulation.
