At Veincentre, we specialise in walk-in, walk-out treatments that allow you to return to your daily routine the same day.

We’re here to ensure you have all the information you need for a smooth recovery journey. This guide will walk you through what to expect before, during, and after treatment to help you feel confident and prepared.

What To Expect After Varicose Vein Surgery

Your recovery experience will depend on the type of treatment you’ve had. At Veincentre, our consultants specialise in minimally invasive procedures, such as Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA). This approach ensures reduced recovery times and a quick return to your daily routine.

 Immediate Aftercare

  • Compression Stockings: You will be advised to wear class II compression stockings continuously for a minimum of 7 days to encourage healthy blood flow and ensure you get the best possible results.
  • Mobility: Walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure to promote blood flow. We recommend at least three 20-minute walk each day and avoiding sitting in one position for more than 2 hours.
  • Pain Management: Mild/moderate pain is normal but usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol and/or ibuprofen. You can contact us at any time if you have concerns or need additional guidance.

Varicose Vein Surgery Recovery Time

Recovery times vary depending on the procedure, but most patients return to their normal activities straight away. Full healing may take a few weeks, but if you previously experienced symptoms such as pain, heaviness, or swelling, noticeable improvement in these symptoms is often immediate.

Over the first couple of weeks, you may experience some bruising, tightness, or tenderness which will gradually subside. Bruising can be particularly extensive around the vein treated with EVLA and usually resolves in 2-3 weeks. In a small number of cases, symptoms following ablation can take longer to subside. There can be minor oozing on the dressings applied over the pin-hole skin access for the laser fibre.

Most patients will see a mixture of lumpy treated veins and some residual varicose veins when they initially take off their stockings. The EVLA treatment is designed to deal with the underlying cause and may reduce the size of the varicose veins but the visible varicose veins  need to be treated with sclerotherapy treatment which is usually required at least one treatment at the time of the EVLA and/or at follow-up appointment,

How long off work after varicose vein surgery: Typically, patients can return to work the same or the following day after treatment. However, if your job involves high-intensity physical work or long periods of standing or sitting, a short break from work may be more appropriate.

How soon can I drive after EVLA? You can  drive the following day.

Tips For A Smooth Recovery

  • Gentle Exercise: Walking is highly recommended from day one. Keeping mobile promotes healthy blood flow and supports the healing process. Aim for at least 20 minutes of walking three times each day.
  • Compression Stockings: Wear your compression stockings for at least 7 days continuously. This helps with circulation and speeds up recovery.
  • Pain Management: Most pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Remember, we’re always here to support you – feel free to contact us if you’re experiencing discomfort or have any concerns.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy diet, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting can aid your recovery.
  • Monitoring Symptoms: Some lumpiness over the treated veins is expected and is part of the normal healing process. This can last for a few months as your body reabsorbs the veins. If you notice redness, warmth, or increased pain, contact us for advice.

If you are feeling worried or unsure at any stage of your recovery, please don’t hesitate to contact Veincentre. Our experienced consultants are here to support you every step of the way and provide the reassurance and guidance you need.
