Student Nurse Jen, struggled for years with uncomfortable varicose veins that made her feel self-conscious and stopped her from doing so much of what she enjoyed. Since her treatment at Veincentre, Jen is back in the gym, practising yoga, and preparing for both the Kielder Marathon and a dream hike along Italy’s Path of the Gods!
As a student nurse, Jen spends long hours on her feet, working 12-hour shifts that often left her legs feeling heavy and painful. She has always loved hiking, but during long hikes, she would experience throbbing pain in her legs. Jen avoided wearing shorts or dresses, edited her varicose veins out of photos, and even felt uncomfortable in leggings due to the bumps showing through. Despite trying compression stockings and various creams for her venous eczema, nothing seemed to help. She even stopped going to the gym out of fear that exercise might make her vein issues worse, which left her feeling weaker. As a nurse, she knew that varicose veins only worsen over time, increasing the risk of developing ulcers. After years of considering treatment, she decided that enough was enough and that she wanted to feel strong and healthy again.
Jen chose to go for a consultation at Veincentre, where she met Dr. Mark Regi. After her consultation, Jen decided to go ahead with her tailored treatment pathway of EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation), foam sclerotherapy, and avulsions. She appreciated having the same consultant throughout her journey as she felt her conversation with Dr. Mark Regi was continued from the consultation to the treatment. Before the procedure, Jen was nervous, but she was shocked to find that “nothing hurt at all.” She explains “My experience was amazing! The clinic was clean and beautiful, and I felt completely at ease thanks to the caring team. I was really well looked after, and everyone was lovely.”
Jen’s results were almost immediate, her venous eczema disappeared within days of the procedure, and the heaviness and throbbing pain that had bothered her during long shifts and hikes had gone. She is over the moon with her new legs and is now able to wear shorts with confidence. Since her treatment, Jen has returned to the gym, rebuilding her strength, and even started yoga! She’s now taking on challenges she never thought possible, including the breath-taking Kielder Marathon in Northumberland, known for its stunning views. One of the biggest milestones in her journey is coming up in April when she will be heading to Italy to hike the Path of the Gods!
Reflecting on her experience, Jen urges others not to overthink the decision to seek treatment, “I missed out on so many things because I was overthinking getting treatment. I would say to other people to just go for it, it will change your life.” Now, with pain-free legs and newfound confidence, she is embracing life to the fullest.
