James spends a lot of time on his feet and likes to keep active, so having his varicose veins and ulcer treated has given him a new lease of life.

What was the problem James was experiencing?

James, from Brighton, had been struggling for some time with varicose veins in both legs but thought it was something he just needed to live with and ignore.

He noticed that he had developed a large ulcer near his ankle, which became more painful over time. He decided it was time to book himself into our Brighton clinic to put an end to them.

How and why do venous ulcers develop?

Ulcers can develop when varicose veins are left untreated for a long time. As the pressure inside the vein gets worse, the skin can begin to break down and lead to varicose eczema. Varicose eczema can be extremely irritating, itchy and sore and if the veins are still left untreated, an ulcer may develop due to the breakdown of the skin and poor blood circulation. They can be extremely painful, people may experience swollen ankles, heavy legs, hardening and discolouration of the skin, and the ulcer may ooze discharge. Venous ulcers occur in around 6% of cases.

James was worried that the treatment to get rid of his veins and ulcer would be too painful and that there would be a long recovery period, but was over the moon that he was able to do gentle exercise straight away and get back to work the very next day, thanks to our walk-in, walk-out treatments.

What is the advice for patients going about their normal daily lives after treatment?

After treatment patients are recommended to wear compression stockings and moderate exercise such as walking straight away. Staying mobile is important following treatment to help the healing and boost the circulation.

What did James say about his treatment journey?

“Dr Mark Regi and the team kept me totally at ease throughout the whole procedure. It was the second largest vein that Dr Regi had ever treated apparently too, and I certainly felt like I was in the best of hands. I would have no hesitation in recommending Veincentre to friends and family as it really has made such a positive impact to my life.”

What treatment did James have?

James attended the Brighton clinic at Montpelier Place and had EVLA and sclerotherapy on both legs. He is delighted with the results!

“The stockings were uncomfortable but I’m glad I had the treatment in the winter time as they were like an extra layer of clothing to keep me warm, and no one could see them too.”
